WGAL - Where No Cameras Have Gone Before

WGAL is the NBC-affiliated television station for South Central Pennsylvania. It broadcasts a HD digital signal on VHF channel 8. Owned by Hearst Television, the station’s studio is in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Broadcast Barrier:

WGAL had an existing camera network of four cameras that used microwave transmission.
WGAL wanted to enhance their community-wide camera network.
• Local geography prevented the existing video over microwave transmissions from being a viable option in surrounding locations.

Weather Metrics Solution:

• They added another five WeatherVisionTM cameras to the network
• 100% digital, IP based WeatherVision allowed cameras to be located in areas previously unreachable by traditional cameras.
• Network-wide camera sponsorship sold to offset the cost of the new camera system.
• Installation and training completed in one day and the news team previewed the new cameras on-air the same evening.

Immediate Rewards:

• No out-of-pocket cost to the station. Jones GMC’s paid for the addition of the WeatherVision cameras to WGAL’s existing network.
• WeatherVision’s IP based cameras finally allowed WGAL to have a camera presence in locations such as Carlisle and Ephrata where other camera solutions were impossible.
WGAL has increased their presence in the outlying communities – including historic Lincoln Square in Gettysburg, PA and facing Hershey Park in Hershey, PA
